University Email Protection

To help protect student and faculty accounts from malicious emails, 香港伦理 inspects all incoming email messages for potential threats and assists in reducing "spam" email messages using a filtering service named Proofpoint.

How does email filtering work?

  1. All incoming email messages are scanned by our Proofpoint service before being delivered to your inbox.
  2. Proopoint filters out messages that are potentially malicious or unsolicited (spam).

How do I know what was filtered out?

  1. Every morning, sometimes more often depending on the amount of email you receive, you will receive an email digest from Proofpoint, with a list of messages that were not delivered to your inbox. See the screenshot below for an example.
  2. Simply review the list of messages in the digest and take any action you wish on each message. See below for information about actions you can take for individual messages.

What if I want some of the email that was filtered out?

For any of the individual messages filtered out to be delivered to your inbox, you may take the following actions in the Actions column (1 in the screenshot above):
  • Release - delivers the message to your Inbox.
  • Release and Allow Sender - delivers the message to your Inbox and adds the address to your Safe Senders list.
  • Block Sender - add the address to your Blocked Senders list.
  • Not Spam - delivers the messages and marks the message as not spam.

How can I control the email filter?

The Manage My Account link at the top of the email (2 in the screenshot above) will take you to the Web Application where you can also view and take the same actions on messages in the Spam and Low Priority Mail lists, as manage your personal Safe Senders and Blocked Senders lists from the Lists tab.

  • The Safe Senders list is simply a list of approved senders of email. When a sender address is included in the Safe Senders list, it will not be filtered as spam. Messages will still be filtered for a virus or inappropriate content. When you add a domain name (e.g., yahoo.com) to the Safe Senders list, all email addresses from that domain will be considered “safe.” Note: you should restrict the safe list only to specific senders by entering their full email addresses (for example, john.doe@yahoo.com).
  • The Blocked Senders list contains addresses of people or mailing lists from whom you do not wish to receive email.
