How to Update my Syllabus?
The video below provides an overview of the process. For detailed guidance, refer to the Simple Syllabus page for step-by-step instructions.
When I upload a file, students are getting an 'unauthorized' error message. How can I fix this?
This error typically occurs when a file is linked from a location that students cannot access.
Common causes include:
- Uploading a file to My Files instead of Course Files.
- Copying and pasting file links from another course rather than re-linking the file directly from the destination course.
To resolve the issue:
- Open your course and select Files.
- Upload the file to your course files by selecting Upload and following the prompts.
- Return to the page where the file link appears and select Edit.
- Use Insert > Document > Course Document to locate the file in your course files.
- Insert the file and select Save.
Additional information:
Tips:
- Course files include any content uploaded to a course.
- At 香港伦理, each Canvas course has 524 MB of file storage.
- Use Kaltura to store and share video content rather than uploading video files directly to Canvas course files. This helps conserve course storage space and provides a better viewing experience for students, including automated captions generated using speech recognition technology.
How do I access a course from a previous term?
After a course has officially ended, you can still access it in a read only state by following these steps:
- Click on Courses in the Global menu.
- Scroll down and click on All Courses.
- On the All Courses page, scroll down to Past Enrollments and click on the course you wish to view. You are not able to add a past enrollment course to your dashboard.

How do I grade work in a course from a previous term?
You may need to grade work in a course from a previous term for students who have received an Incomplete. If a course has ended, then the Canvas course will automatically change to a read-only state for students and they are no longer able to submit work unless they received extended access. If a student(s) needs additional time to complete this course as part of an 'Incomplete' grade, the instructor needs to do the following:
- Request extended course access by contacting Ed Tech Systems.
- Notify the Office of the Registrar of the extension, if the extension is beyond 60 days from the end of the course.
Include the following information when contacting these departments:
- The student(s) that is receiving an extension.
- The course CRN. This is included in the course name in Canvas.
- The course term.
- The date the extension is being granted until.
